Character Name: Winifred "Fred" Burkle
Series: Angel
Age: 29 (although she is truly 34 at the time the Barge ‘hostage rescue’ happens, I don't expect she aged on the Narrenschiff)
From When?: Season 5, episode 15.

Warden Justification: Fred is a kind, brilliant woman who will work with an inmate to help them find options. She tends to be remarkably observant and uses that to her advantage to get to the root of a problem.

She's been through a lot in her life, including being shoved into a hell dimension and treated as a non-person, so she might do well with guiding people who have cracked under trauma, as well. She's also got several years' experience working for an agency that focuses on 'helping the helpless.' She genuinely enjoys doing the work. Fred will be unlikely to try and 'force' someone into redemption, but will present a myriad of reasons for an inmate to help themselves or accept help.

Fred can be quite patient if she feels that her methods will make progress. If she's managed to make a roadmap for how things might go, she'll be confident they can get there. She's also extremely determined, once she sets her mind on something. She will never give up, and that's a big part of why she was still trying to get back to Los Angeles after several years aboard the Narrenschiff.

Item: A pocket-sized, college-lined composition notebook.

Abilities/Powers: Fred is fully human and doesn't have any 'powers,' per se. However, she is a genius-level physicist. She's also an expert at early-2000s computer hacking, picks up languages easily, and is fairly well-versed in many other science disciplines. She's a master survivalist, having lived several years in a cave with nothing to her name. She likes making contraptions, gadgets, and weapons. She's also an expert marksman and skilled in combat.

One Other Note- While it hasn't happened to her yet, she dies because she is infected by what is essentially an Old God named Illyria. It's been posited that some mild foreshadowing might indicate some mild influence from Illyria, even before Fred is infected (as Ancient Ones don't always follow the normal flow of time). It doesn't give her any powers or anything, but considering the other Lovecraftian gods on board, it might give her slightly more awareness than others. (obviously I would check OOC if something like this comes up in plot).

Wardening Strategies and Philosophies: Fred views herself as part of the team, both back home and on the Barge. She'll try to be helpful otherwise as well, but her commitment will be to her inmate (once she understands this new system). She's likely to treat them as a partner she's working with.

Her wardening strengths are likely to be her cheery, optimistic nature and depth of knowledge. She’s going to be focusing her research skills on understanding who she’s paired with and how to help them. It will help her present her inmate with options they might not have thought of before. She’s exceptional with problem-solving and understands that the issues she’s going to be dealing with are likely very complicated. She’ll work through it with her inmate.

If someone isn't interested in pursuing redemption, she's likely to leave them alone. But she is a person who enjoys her work and would be unlikely to be helpful to someone who is very adamantly against the process. Likewise, someone who sees no problem in owning slaves or is a pure sadist is not going to get very far with her.

People who she’d pair well with could be fellow nerds like her, but also people working through a giant shift in their entire life’s perspective. She's had experience with that herself. She’d also do well with people who like to gloss or whitewash their actions- while she is often very sympathetic, she doesn’t hesitate to call out bullshit when she sees it.

Deal: She would like her life back, please. This might become more complicated if she learns more about her friends’ relationships with Illyria, but just being alive a good place to start.

History: Canon History.

Narrenschiff History: She had been on the Narrenschiff for about five years, and had slowly grown increasingly less okay with what they were doing. She spent most of her time delving deeply into astrophysics and trying to find a solution to making her way back home. Unfortunately, the Cap’n was even more vague than the Admiral is about particulars. It took her ages to merely figure out that their raids weren’t just for goods and ‘power,’ but also for some sort of energy that kept them all going.

Sample Network Entry:
[ The woman who appears on-screen looks like Root. Maybe a little younger. However, the way she’s grinning and awkwardly waving at the screen is probably an indicator that something’s off here. It’s not just that she’s clearly death-tolling, looking particularly pale. ]

Um, hello everyone! My name is Fred- Winifred Burkle, actually, but I usually go by Fred. And I’m a warden now? I guess? I don’t know how that gets decided here, but I just wanted to say hello. If you see me around, I’m...actually one of the few that made it over from the other ship.

I’m going to try and help fixing things. I’m really good with simple machines and okay with electrical and electronic things. And- well, physics is my best subject, but I don’t suppose anyone really needs a lesson right now.

[ She looks down, clearly lost in thought before shakes her head and tries to get herself back into a Video Post mode. This was a lot easier when she was dealing with evil research assistants rather than people she actually wants to know. ]

Anyway! Tell me if there’s somewhere I can be of assistance. I know the ship’s a mess, I wanna help with what I can.

Also, I really didn’t take part in that big fight at the end. I never hurt the Barge, so please don’t...y’know, murder me? I’d appreciate that, too.

Sample RP: Here is a log thread!

Special Notes: If all goes well, she's coming directly from the Narrenschiff, immediately after TLV's October 2024 Deep Waters plot!
